The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the supreme award in Indian cinema. This award is conferred every year at the National Film Awards function by the Directorate of Film Festivals. Directorate of Film Festivals is an institution set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The remittee is honoured for his “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.” The remittee is selected by a committee comprising prominent personalities from the Indian film industry. This award consists of a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs. 1,000,000 (US$14,000). Phalke was an Indian film-maker who directed India’s first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra in 1913. His life pan is from 1870 to 1944. He is popularly considered as “the father of Indian cinema.” The Dadasaheb Phalke Award firstly given in 1969. This award was introduced by the Government of India to commemorate Dadasaheb Phalke’s contribution to Indian cinema. The first remittee of this award was actress Devika Rani. She was honoured at the 17th National Film Awards.
