John Mathai was the first railway minister of independent India. He started work from 15 Aug 1947, the day India became independent. Indian Railways is India's national railway system conducted by the Ministry of Railways. It is the fourth-largest railway network of the world with 121,407 kilometres of total track over a 67,368-kilometre route. Forty nine percent of these routes are electrified with 25 KV AC electric traction and thirty three percent of these routes are double or multi-tracked. Indian Railway runs more than 20,000 passenger trains day to day, on both long-distance and suburban routes. There are 7,349 stations in India.
